I Want That

This project was an assignment for the Visual Design course at De:Hive.
For this assignment, we were asked to repurpose a character from a photograph and put it in a new situation, with a new design; in short, to make it our own. Here is the photograph:

Conception

In order to best adapt the original design, I started by tracing and copying the provided photo. This gave me a good sense of the original character’s proportions, as well as its overall appearance.

Tracing the picture with transparent paper

The pattern of the coat seemed to me like the most recognizable thing about that character. I spent some time researching colours and textures in order to give an aesthetically pleasing but also immediately identifiable look to the character.

I eventually opted for a watercolour style with vibrant colours that would give a playful, almost childlike look to the redesigned character.

Sketches

Here are a couple of sketches I used for the final result. I ultimately decided to keep these two poses.

The first one struck me as interesting because it tells a story about the relationship between the woman and her goose.

The second one seemed more relevant from a character design perspective, with a dynamic pose that you can imagine moving to the right or left in a side-scroller, featuring animation of the various body parts, all drawn and cut out independently.
